Beijing 2022 Makes History – The Winter Olympics is Back

Next month China is set to host the 24th Winter Olympic Games, with the majority of the action taking place in between 4 and 20 February. Commonly referred to as Beijing 2022, the ceremonies and a significant amount of the action will be occurring in China’s capital, with certain events being outsourced elsewhere.

The first Winter Olympics was held back in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and the final medal table consisted of 11 nations and was topped by Austria, who’s 3 medals were sufficient to claim first place. This time round, 92 NOC nations, consisting of over 3000 athletes, are set to compete across more than 100 events. This alone shows how the Winter Olympics has grown since its inception.

Elected as the host city in 2015, Beijing is the first city to have ever hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics with some of the facilities that were built for the 2008 Summer Games to be re-used this February. Additionally, the Games mark China’s first-ever Winter Olympics but continues an impressive run for East Asian Olympic host nations, as it follows on from the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games.
