Summer luxury in the French Alps

No snow, no problem for a luxury summer retreat in Val d’Isere

Val d’Isere and the French Alps are synonymous with exceptional snow sports, the mountains presumed to be at their best when crowned with white. However, this stunning landscape loses none of its magic after the snow melts and is the perfect location for summer sun and fine dining after days exploring the area by bike or foot.

Thrill seekers don’t have to wait for the snow to hit the slopes – Val d’Isere is a mountain biker’s paradise. The crisp wind blows across the peaks, bringing the scent of adventure as you start your ascent. Kilometres of prepared trails wind up and down the mountains and through the valley, past enchanting woodlands, overlooking the Alps as they reach up into ice blue summer skies, and over the ethereal magnificence of the glacier, stretching its white tongue down the slopes.

The most well-known route is the challenging Col de I’Iseran, the highest paved road in Europe. A gradual climb ascends over 2,750m but there are opportunities to take a breather at some of the many vantage points overlooking the glacier and the Vanoise National Park along the way. If that sounds too intense, the area has an extensive bike park, covering downhill ascents, endurance rides and plenty for novice riders and children.

When considering your accommodation, Blend Group recommend the village of Le Fornet. Small mountain streets are lined with quaint traditional chalets built in Savoyard wood and stone. This is French charm at its finest, just a 2.5km walk, or five minute shuttle from the shopping and sports of Val d’Isere village. In winter, Le Fornet offers its own ski area, connected to the larger Espace Killy, offering keen skiers the chance to ski in both France and Italy.

While the mountains are made for adventure, the valley is designed for indulgence. World-class spas entice guests with lengthy treatment menus, and Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Benoit Vidal’s Atelier d’Edmond, serve global cuisines with a local flair. The valley’s famous Après ski scene doesn’t stop with the snow and sipping a cocktail as the sun sets behind the mountains, turning the green peaks gently pink as the evening draws in, is the perfect reward for summer spent on these iconic slopes.

Summer or winter, skiing or spa, Blend Group is on hand to source your perfect chalet in Val d’Isere. Get in touch via the website.
