The Ultimate Guide to the 2024/25 Premier League Season

Last month the Premier League announced its fixture list for the upcoming 2024/25 season which kicks off on Friday the 16th of August with Fulham travelling to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, just 90 days after the conclusion of the last campaign.

As one of Europe’s Big Five and arguably the most-watched football league on the planet, the Premier League consistently has the eyes of the world upon it. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming season.

Schedule

The pick of the bunch in Gameweek 1 comes on the season’s first Super Sunday as reigning champions, Manchester City, travel to West London to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, newly promoted Ipswich Town host Liverpool who will look to begin their post-Jurgen Klopp era with a bang, while fellow London-based clubs Crystal Palace and Brentford go head to head at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.

Significantly, the Premier League appears to have taken heed of complaints made by managers in recent years of a highly congested schedule over Christmas and New Year. It’s been announced that more rest time will be given to sides over three festive match rounds, with no club playing within 60 hours of another match. The idea is that the alteration will allow for increased recovery periods during the busiest time of the season, helping to reduce injury and player fatigue throughout the second half of the campaign.

The season wraps up in May with all final round fixtures set to take place at the same time on Sunday the 25th.

Last Season

Last time round Manchester City collected their fourth Premier League title in a row, becoming the first side in the history of the competition to do so. They have now won six of the last seven campaigns, asserting absolute dominance over the modern era.

The remaining three Champions League places were claimed by Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa, while Tottenham and Chelsea finished in the Europa League positions and Newcastle United finished 7th to earn a place in the Europa Conference League. However, an unexpected FA Cup victory for Manchester United over Manchester City meant they retrospectively replaced Newcastle as the seventh club to represent the Premier League in next season’s European tournaments.

Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton were relegated from the top flight and replaced by Ipswich along with Leicester City and Southampton, who both returned to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Impacting factors this summer

Football fans have not been neglected throughout the summer months, as both the UEFA European Championships and Copa America have been entertaining audiences across the two continents.

International tournaments, as well as providing excitement throughout the off-season, are traditionally used as ‘shop windows’ for players, with the best-performing talent often attracting attention from the biggest clubs in the world.

Only time will tell whether any high-profile transfers ensue, however, clubs will need to act quickly as the Premier League has brought forward the summer transfer window’s Deadline Day to Friday 30th August, in order to align with other major European leagues.

Clubs will also need to be wary of increasingly stringent Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), which limit the amount of losses a club can register over a three-year period. Last season two clubs were hit with point deductions towards the end of the campaign, an eventuality that all will be desperate to avoid this time around.
