When is the Masters?
The Masters
The Masters is one of the most prestigious events in the golfing calendar, attracting the world’s best players to compete for the coveted Green Jacket.
As the first Major in the schedule, it holds a special significance for golf enthusiasts worldwide. It has been the home to some of golf’s most iconic moments since 1934.
Over four days and 72 holes, the smallest field in major championship golf competes for the Green Jacket and a place in Masters history.
When is the Masters Golf Tournament?
The 2025 Masters Tournament proper is scheduled to take place from Thursday, April 10th, to Sunday, April 13th, 2025.
However, the week kicks off with practice rounds beginning on Monday, April 7th, allowing players to familiarise themselves with the challenging course and settle any pre-competition nerves that may impact their swing.
Fast forward to the final round which takes place on Sunday April 13th where the winner of the competition is crowned with the iconic Green Jacket.
Where is the Masters Held?
The Masters is held at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, USA.
Known for its pristine fairways, blooming azaleas, and the iconic Amen Corner (holes 11, 12, and 13), Augusta National provides a picturesque and challenging setting that has become synonymous with the tournament itself.
Augusta was designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie with modifications over the years to provide fresh challenges for players who consistently return to the course.
Adding an even further test, the location of the hole on the green is changed between each round to challenge the golfer’s play.
Unlike other competitions, The Masters is always held at the Augusta National course.
Masters Schedule
The tournament-proper spans four days, with each day featuring a full round of 18 holes. Here’s a topline breakdown of the week’s schedule:
Monday, April 7th & Tuesday April 8th: Practice rounds, this is when the fans get a first glimpse of the contenders. It allows the golfers to familiarise themselves with the course and expel any pre-competition nervousness.
Wednesday, April 9th: Practice rounds and the Par 3 Contest, a fan-favorite event where players often have family members caddy for them.
Fun fact – no player has ever won the Wednesday Par 3 contest and then gone on to win the Masters tournament itself in the same year.
Thursday, April 10th – Friday, April 11th: First and second rounds, after which the field is cut based on scores. The field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed. The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began.
Saturday, April 12th: Third round, often referred to as “Moving Day,” where players position themselves for the final push.
Sunday, April 13th: The spectacle, the final round, culminating in the presentation of the Green Jacket to the champion. All eyes are on ‘Sunday at the Masters’, where history is won and lost.
Previous Winners of the Masters
The Masters has a rich history of champions who have left an indelible mark on the sport. Here is a list of recent winners:
2024: Scottie Scheffler secured his second Masters title with a four-stroke victory over Ludvig Åberg.
2023: Jon Rahm claimed his first Green Jacket, finishing four strokes ahead of runners-up Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson.
2022: Scottie Scheffler earned his inaugural Masters win, defeating Rory McIlroy by three strokes.
2021: Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese player to win the Masters, edging out Will Zalatoris by one stroke.
2020: Dustin Johnson set a tournament record with a 20-under-par performance, winning by five strokes over Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith.
Iconic golfer Jack Nicklaus presides above the rest with a record six victories. One more than legend Tiger Woods, and two more than Arnold Palmer who has four wins.
It comes as no surprise that golfers representing the USA have won the most titles, with 64, with the next best being Spain with six.
In 2025, Scottie Sheffler is the bookies favourite leading up to the tournament. But with two wins already on tour this season Rory McIlroy is on form and will be, once again, hunting down an elusive Green Jacket.
Prize Money
The Masters offers one of the most lucrative purses in golf. In 2024, the total purse was $20 million, with the champion, Scottie Scheffler, receiving $3.6 million.
The prize distribution for 2025 has yet to be announced but is expected to be released during the week of the tournament and will likely be a similar figure.
What we can say for sure is, the winner of The Masters will be receiving an eye-watering amount of money.
Aside from the purse, winning The Masters secures golfers a place in history.
The champion receives a lifetime invitation to compete in the tournament, an invitation to the PGA Tour’s other major events, and, of course, the iconic Green Jacket, which can only be worn at Augusta National.

Historic Moments at the Masters
The Masters has produced some of the most unforgettable moments in golf history. A few highlights include:
Jack Nicklaus’ 6th Win: At age 46, Nicklaus became the oldest Masters champion
Tiger Woods’ Iconic Chip: A moment which has been played over and over again.
Phil Mickelson’s first major in 2004: After years of near misses, Mickelson holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to secure his first major championship.
Jordan Spieth’s collapse in 2016: Spieth had a five shot lead heading into the back nine on the final round, but a disastrous quadruple-bogey on the 12th hole handed the victory to Danny Willett.
What can we expect to see in 2025? McIlroy finally achieving his dreams. Scottie placing himself among the elite. Or an unexpected winner forging their own history.
