The 2022/23 Premier League Season Kicks Off
The start of a new Premier League campaign never fails to induce a level of excitement around the globe that only the most followed league in the world of football can achieve. This season it’s come around a little earlier than usual, due to the upcoming winter World Cup being held in Qatar which has meant less of a break for the players. But there is no doubt whatsoever that they, like the fans, will be relishing a new Premier League season and all that comes with it.
The last campaign went down to the wire, with final day excitement and jeopardy at both ends of the table. Manchester City came from two goals down against Aston Villa to win 3-2 and secure their second title in as many seasons and sixth overall, getting the better of Liverpool by one point. Meanwhile down the bottom, Leeds United managed to survive on the final day at the expense of Burnley, who joined Watford and Norwich in relegation to the Championship.
Going the other way and joining the party from the Championship this season are Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, in what is Forest’s first season back in the top flight since 1999. It will be interesting to see how the two-time European Cup and FA Cup winners fare back in the big time after such an extended absence.
It will also be fascinating to keep an eye on whether Manchester United’s new manager, Erik ten Hag, can turn the fortunes of the Premier League’s most successful club of all time. However, a shaky start against Brighton on the opening weekend doesn’t bode well for the Red Devils’ new manager. Having seen a string of managers fail to satisfy the club’s fanbase or win the league since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, United will be hoping that ten Haag’s impressive reputation leads to the return of domestic success.
We’ll have to wait until September to see the Women’s Super League (WSL) back in action and after an incredible summer of international women’s football, which saw England’s Lionesses win the European Championships, it’s sure to be the most anticipated season ever.
