Gearing up to this year’s F1 World Championship

More action, more competition and more access to one of the world’s most exciting spectacles
    16 February, 2024

Last season’s Formula 1 campaign saw Max Verstappen claim his third successive World Drivers’ Championship title in dominant fashion, securing a record 19 wins out of 22 Grand Prix starts and breaking the record for the highest Grand Prix driver win percentage in the process. His commanding performance was such that he finished on the podium on an incredible 21 out of 22 occasions.

Additionally, Verstappen’s team, Red Bull, earned its sixth Constructors’ Championship title, finishing lower than first place in only one race and, with a win rate of 95.45%, breaking the team record for the highest percentage of Grand Prix wins in a season.

A closer campaign this time round?

Many will be hoping that the 2024 season proves to be a closer affair, especially due to the fact that two of Red Bull’s closest rivals, Ferrari and McLaren, showed promise towards the back end of 2023.

While Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, previously compared the task of catching up with Red Bull’s superior set-up to climbing Mount Everest, the Brackley-based outfit has made significant changes throughout its team, offering fresh hope and a genuine chance of improvement on their recent efforts.

Only time will tell whether Red Bull’s rivals have stepped up to the extent that they will offer genuine competition, however, the early signs are that we’re in for a closer run this time around.

    The 2024 F1 race calendar

This season will see the ten teams compete across a record-breaking 24-race calendar, ensuring maximum action for spectators. We kick off in Bahrain on the first weekend of March, with the race unconventionally taking place on Saturday, before heading to Saudi Arabia and then Melbourne.

A regionalised calendar has been implemented in an attempt to improve the sustainability of the series, including bringing forward the Japanese GP from its usual September allocation to April, where it now sits in between the Australian and Chinese legs of the tour. The Chinese GP returns after a four-year absence, providing intrigue early on in the season.

Access to the sport continues to increase

To coincide with the commencement of the new season, Netflix is releasing the second instalment of their Drive to Survive series, which will excite audiences with exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of last year’s action.

Additionally, the Formula 1 Exhibition heads to Vienna, following its successful debut in Madrid. The immersive F1 experience is portrayed across six specifically designed rooms and gives viewers an in-depth, unique view of the sport and its history.
