The Chelsea Flower Show
This May the world’s most prestigious flower show returns to West London, as the Chelsea Flower Show is set to be staged at the Royal Hospital Grounds, near Sloane Square. An event that is adored by many, the show is running from the 23rd to the 27th of May and will showcase twelve predominant gardens, seeking to both celebrate and critique the times we live in.
What to expect
As always, the gardens’ themes will reflect environmental and societal talking points and the streets and storefronts of Chelsea will be adorned with whimsical and imaginative floral décor, as per tradition. Among the highlights this year are the Centre for Mental Health’s Balance Garden, which explores the importance of inclusivity and affordability through authentic natural experiences in the urban landscape, as well as Jilayne Rickards’ Fauna & Flora International Garden. As instructed by Sir David Attenborough, the latter celebrates the success of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme by mapping the journey of an ecotourist on a gorilla trek in Central Africa.
We’re also especially excited to see the Hoban Cultural Foundation’s Land of Healing, as designed by Jihae Hwang, which represents one of the few remaining medicinal herbal colonies in South Korea and aims to highlight the importance of the recovery of our natural environment. Adding to the overall feeling of wellness and peace, visitors can also revel in the serenity of the Samaritans’ Listening Garden, designed by Darren Hawkes and sponsored by Project Giving Back and the Samaritans. This piece intends to provide a safe and secure space where people can feel comfortable sharing their internal struggles and thoughts.
