The Kulm Hotel, St Moritz: A Grande Dame Built for Ski Season
Every morning, the Kulm’s Alpine Sports Lounge & Boutique, designed by Foster + Partners, has boots and skis prepared and waiting.
Imagine walking out and onto the slopes. No hunting for hire kit, no frustrating queue, no wasted first hour of the day. We know how precious every moment is.
Where St Moritz’s Winter Began
The Kulm has stood at the centre of St Moritz since 1864, the year its founder, Johannes Badrutt, persuaded a group of departing summer guests to come back and try the Engadine in winter instead.
They did, and St Moritz’s winter season has run on that same bet ever since. More than 150 years on, the Kulm remains one of the resort’s defining addresses.
It sits close to the sport it helped invent, too. The Olympic Bob Run and the Cresta Run are both nearby, a short walk from a hotel that’s been shaping the resort’s identity since before either existed.
The Details That Make a Ski Day Work
A complimentary mountain pass comes with every stay, along with ski lessons for children, so much of the practical planning is dealt with before you’ve unpacked.
Then there’s the satisfaction only a ski day delivers. Coming back to the Kulm, peeling off wet layers, and settling by the fire with a drink while the rest of the resort is still finding its way home.
Built For Families, Without Feeling Like a Family Hotel
The Kulm manages something a lot of grand hotels don’t: it caters for families without tipping into being a family resort.
The draw for children is the Wunderwald Kids’ Club, built around pizza-making and mocktails rather than a supervised holding pen.
There’s a children’s pool inside the hotel’s 2,000-square-metre spa, and connecting suites make multi-generational stays straightforward rather than a logistical exercise.
We find skiing trips are particularly popular with families with young children. Properties that cater for the entire family help make the experience even more complete.
When to Go
The Kulm opens for two seasons a year and closes between them, so this isn’t a hotel you can book on a whim.
If skiing is the plan, we recommend getting your dates in early.
