Masters Badges: What They Are and How to Get Access

At The Masters tickets are called badges (@goldenageauctions)

The Masters is a tradition unlike any other in sport.

    No rotating venues.
    No corporate naming rights.
    No influencer marketing.

Augusta National does things its own way, and that extends to the very way you get through the gates.

At The Masters, tickets are called badges, and a Masters badge represents access to one of the most exclusive sporting events in the world.

If you are interested in attending this famous tournament then it is important to understand how the badge system works.

Whether you are a passionate golf fan ticking off the ultimate bucket list event, a corporate host looking to impress your most valued clients, or simply someone who has always wondered what it takes to walk the fairways at Augusta, this guide covers everything you need to know.

The Masters feels entirely separate from every other tournament on the golfing calendar

Why Does The Masters Call Them Badges?

Augusta National has numerous set rules and traditions.

Spectators are referred to as patrons, the rough is the second cut, and tickets are badges.

This all adds to the culture and tradition that makes The Masters feel entirely separate from every other tournament on the golfing calendar.

The term ‘badge’ reflects the physical form of the credential itself.

Rather than a paper ticket, patrons wear a laminated badge that must be visible at all times while on the grounds. This small detail has not wavered since 1934.

What Are the Different Types of Masters Badges?

There are three main categories of badge at The Masters, each offering a different level of access to the tournament.

    Series Badges (Patron Badges)

The series badge is the most coveted credential in golf. It grants the holder admission to all four tournament days, from the first tee-time on Thursday through to the stretch on Sunday, every single year.

Series badge holders receive their credentials annually and can bring one junior guest at no additional cost.

Whilst this sounds like a dream to any avid golf fan, the waiting list for series badges was created in 1972, closed in 1978 due to overwhelming demand, opened briefly in 2000 for a random selection, and has been closed ever since.

Essentially, nobody outside Augusta National knows exactly how many series badges exist.

If one becomes available it is believed to be offered to the next person on the historic waiting list, meaning the chances of getting your hands on this accreditation is slim to none.

    Daily Tournament Badges

Daily tournament badges provide access to a single day from Thursday through Sunday.

Opening round on Thursday provides an opportunity to see the traditional starting ceremony.

Chase the cut line on Friday.

Keep pace with moving day on Saturday, often setting up a thrilling final round.

Or place yourself at the heartbeat of the action on Sunday, at The Masters.

    Practice Round Tickets

Practice round tickets cover the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the tournament begins.

Wednesday is particularly popular as it includes the iconic Par 3 Contest, one of the most entertaining traditions in golf.

Augusta National operates an annual application process for badges

How Do You Get Masters Badges?

    The Annual Ticket Lottery

Much like The Championships, Wimbledon, Augusta National operates an annual application process for both practice round tickets and daily tournament badges.

It is referred to as the Masters ticket lottery, though officially it is a random ballot process.

Whilst they are far more accessible than the series badges, the odds are still not in your favour.

Approximately 0.5% of applicants are selected, making this one of the most competitive ticket lotteries in sport.

    How is your luck?

    The Series Badge Waiting List

As showcased earlier in this article, the series badge waiting list has been closed since 2000.

If you were fortunate enough to have your name added during that brief window, stay patient, your time may come!

For everyone else, the waiting list is not currently an option. Augusta National has given no indication of when, or if, it will reopen.

    Premium Hospitality and Experience Packages

For those who want certainty of access, premium hospitality packages offer the most reliable route to The Masters.

These packages typically combine tournament badges with luxury accommodation, private hospitality venues, transfers, and a crafted experience that goes well beyond simply walking the course.

This is the favoured route for corporate hosts, UHNW individuals, and those who want to complete an incredible bucket-list experience at The Masters.

The key consideration with hospitality is lead time. The best packages and most sought-after days require confirming months in advance.

Planning 12 months ahead is not unusual for those looking to secure the right experience.

The Masters is famous for keeping concession prices extraordinarily low

What Should You Know Before Attending The Masters?

Augusta National has strict policies that set it apart from virtually every other sporting venue.

Therefore, it’s important to know and understand the ground rules before getting through the gates for the first time.

Mobile phones are not permitted on the grounds. Camera-only devices are allowed during practice rounds but prohibited during the tournament itself.

Your badge must always be visible, and there is a limit of three gate entries per day, so leaving and re-entering the course is restricted.

Now that you’ve adhered to Augusta National traditions, you can look to the positive side.

The Masters is famous for keeping concession prices extraordinarily low.

The pimento cheese sandwich remains one of sport’s best bargains, and the merchandise selection is among the most coveted in golf.

Arriving early is recommended, both for the experience of watching the course come to life and for accessing the most popular viewing spots around Amen Corner and the Par 3 course.

But don’t forget there is no running on the course, so make sure it is a brisk stroll.

    Planning for The Masters 2027

The 2027 Masters is scheduled for 8 to 11 April, with practice rounds beginning on 5 April and the Par 3 Contest taking place on Wednesday 7 April.

The Masters requires more advanced planning than almost any other event in sport.

Those who leave it to the last minute find themselves on the outside looking in.

Those who plan appropriately find themselves walking the most famous fairways in golf.

Experience The Masters With the Right Access

The Masters is truly one of the most memorable moments in the calendar year.

With the right setting, the right access, and the right company, it would become a moment that lives long in memory.

If you are exploring your options for Augusta in 2027 and beyond, we would love to have a conversation about what is possible.
