This Year’s Must Visit Festivals
As Europe and North America continue to meander through springtime, festival season is beginning to appear on the horizon. In preparation, we’ve taken a look at a handful of the music celebrations across the globe that we’re especially excited about in 2024.
Europe
Considered by many as the highlight of festival season, Glastonbury returns this June at its Somerset farm location following its 50th anniversary last summer. The recently announced headliners include Coldplay who are set to become the first band to top the bill at Worthy Farm five times. The other two major spots have been awarded to Dua Lipa and versatile R&B singer SZA, while Canada’s Shania Twain will play the Legend slot. This year’s edition marks the first time in the festival’s history that two of the three main headliners are female.
Taking place in July on the east coast of Spain between Valencia and Barcelona is Benicassim festival, a pop, rock and electronica bonanza. Its picturesque beach setting and vibrant atmosphere make it one of the most anticipated festivals by music and arts lovers from all over the world. Also in July is Antwerp’s Tomorrowland, the large-scale annual electronic dance festival, which sees global superstars David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Swedish House Mafia take the stage this time round.
North America
Heading across the Atlantic, the United States plays host to two of the world’s most renowned and iconic music and arts festivals once again, in Coachella and Burning Man.
Regarded as one of the world’s hippest yearly occurrences, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which takes place in California, was founded in 1999 and now caters for up to 125,000 festival-goers. This summer, Lana Del Rey has been popularly selected as one of the three main headliners, while No Doubt’s reunion has garnered a lot of excitement as the Gewn Stefani-fronted band is set to play their first show in a decade.
600 miles up the west coast in the desert of north-western Nevada, Burning Man remains ever-present on the festival calendar, taking place across the end of August and start of September. At the heart of the festival is its vision of self-expression and the creation of art, in which festival attendees famously build a self-sustaining community for the week.
Rest of the World
Moving down the continent into South America, Primavera Sound is set to return for a whole host of festivals throughout the continent’s summer period across Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay and Paraguay. With its beginnings in Barcelona, the festival has found a home away from home in Latin America and its impassioned audiences.
Once again, among Asia’s biggest festival draws in 2024 is Japan’s Fuji Rock in July. This year marks 25 years since the celebration moved its home to its current location, Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa-Cho, Niigata. It therefore promises to be a special one, with Noel Gallagher and Kraftwerk already announced to perform.
